Exporting Pets to Australia

Pet-Travel-Clinic-2The Australian import requirements for dogs and cats being exported to Australia have recently changed.  Previously, it was required that they spend six months in a pre-export quarantine facility, undergoing various tests, treatments and examinations to prepare them for export to Australia.  Now, the good news is that the new pre-export protocol does not include the necessity of keeping your pets in a quarantine facility before they leave South Africa.  It must be noted however, that there are still several tests, treatments and examinations required before they are eligible for export.  They also require an Australian import permit, and they will need to spend a minimum of 10 days in a post-export quarantine facility in Australia after they leave South Africa.  Follow these links to the Australian Department of Agriculture website, which explains the pre-export preparation required for your dogs and cats before they will be eligible for export.  We do recommend that you visit the website and familiarise yourself with Australia’s requirements, should you be planning on emigrating to Australia and taking your pets with you.

PLEASE NOTE: After performing the RNATT (rabies) test, which initiates the pre-export preparation of your pets, there is still a minimum period of 180 days (six months) before they are eligible for export to Australia.  Please bear this in mind when you are planning your emigration.

ALSO, note that the timing of the procedures required for preparing your pet for export is absolutely critical, and any delay in performing them could result in aspects of the protocols having to be repeated, which, in turn, will result in delays in your pets’ departure from South Africa.

Pet-Travel-Clinic-3

To ensure your pet is ready to begin the process, your pets will require the following:

  1. An ISO approved microchip will need to be inserted, if he/she does not already have one.  The two commonly used microchips in South Africa are BackHome and Identipet.  Both of these are ISO approved.
  2. A valid rabies vaccination must have been performed within 12 months of the start of the pre-export process, and a vaccination certificate with this vaccination and any previous vaccinations recorded in it must accompany your pet.

We offer three tiers of service in our Pet Travel Clinic:

  1. Basic package:  For this package you will be required to present your pets at our facility on the dates and times required by Paws Resort in order to have the various tests, treatments and examinations performed by Dr Roy or Dr Kristine to prepare them for export.  In addition to the required veterinary preparations, Paws Resort will also do the Australian import application, the booking of your pets into the Australian post-export quarantine station, and any other administrative requirements necessary for preparing your pets for export.

  1. 2.    42-day-boarding Package:  For this package you will be required to either present your pets at Paws Resort for the initial RNATT (rabies) test, which initiates the pre-export preparation of your pet for export, or present them to your local vet to have them perform this test.  Then, at 42 days prior to their departure, you will book them into our facility for boarding in our luxury accommodation, during which time they will undergo the many remaining tests, treatments and examinations necessary to prepare them for export.  Having them board with us will remove the stress of all the transport backwards and forwards during the last 5 weeks of their pre-export period.  They will be right where they need to be, when they need to be there, and it reduces the risk of delays due to not being able to make it to us (or to your local vet) on time for a particular procedure.  We are able to board them for any length of time you may require, in addition to this final 42 days, for example if you are travelling to Australia before your pets are eligible to do so, or if you will be away at a time when a required procedure needs to be done.

We pride ourselves on the individual attention we will give your pets during their time with us, and we and our experienced staff will provide a comfortable and caring environment for them for the duration of their stay.  As part of this package, we will also apply for your pets’ import permits, book them into the Australian post-export quarantine station, and any other administrative requirements of preparing your pet(s) for export.

  1. 3.    The Premium Travel Clinic Package: In this package, we will come to you (if you live within 100km of Paws Resort) and perform all required tests, treatments and examinations within the comfort of your own home.  You (or a trusted representative) will be required to be personally present, and to have your pets ready for examination at the dates and times specified by Paws Resort.  As with the other two package options, we will also apply for your pets’ import permits, book them into the Australian post-export quarantine facility, and any other administrative requirements of preparing your pets for export.

Once your pet has completed his or her pre-export preparation, your pet transport company of choice can collect them from your home, or from Paws Resort, depending on your preference, to transport them to the airport for their flight to Australia.  Should you require a recommendation for a reputable and professional pet transport company, please ask us and we will be happy to advise you.

So contact us today for a quote on a Pet Travel Clinic package that suits your budget and your specific requirements.  We hope that you will let us help you take the stress and trouble out of preparing your pets for export to Australia.  We’ve been doing this for five years now, and experience counts!

Exporting Pets to New Zealand

Pet-Travel-Clinic-4

If you are relocating to New Zealand and would like to take your pets with you, there is some pre-export preparation required for them to be eligible for export.  Paws Resort can assist you with the entire process.

The requirements to begin the pre-export process are as follows:

  1.  All dogs and cats being exported to New Zealand will require an ISO approved microchip to be inserted.  The microchips most commonly used in South Africa (BackHome and Identipet), are both ISO approved.
  2. If the rabies vaccination status of your dog or cat is unknown, or you do not have a certificate to prove their rabies vaccination status, then they will require a Rabies vaccination a minimum of 6 months before they are eligible to travel.  If the rabies vaccinations have been kept current, and they have had a rabies vaccination within the past 12 months, then they are eligible to begin the pre-export process.

The timeline for the pre-export preparation process consists of the following steps:

  1. A rabies titer test (RNATT test) is performed a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 24 months prior to departure.  This test measures the immunity your pets have against rabies and must have a satisfactory result in order for your pet to be eligible for export to New Zealand.
  2. An RNATT declaration must be issued by a Government Veterinarian (State Vet), once the laboratory result for the RNATT test has been received.
  3. A New Zealand import permit is applied for.
  4. A booking is made for your pets’ stay in a post-export quarantine station in New Zealand.
  5. Within 30 days prior to departure, several blood tests, treatments and examinations have to be performed by a veterinarian to further prepare them and ensure they are eligible for export.
  6. A Health Certificate must be issued by the Government Veterinarian (State Vet) within two days of the pets’ departure, and the State Vet must also certify all the travel documents including the import permit, and all laboratory result forms and the vaccination certificate.
  7. Your pet will then be eligible for export to New Zealand, and on arrival in New Zealand, will be examined by an Official Government Veterinarian, and then if they meet all health standard requirements, they will be held in a post-export quarantine station in New Zealand for 10 days before being released to you.

Paws Resort can assist with the entire process, and we will be your one-stop facility for completing the entire pre-export preparation of your pets.

Similarly to our Australian pre-export preparation, we offer a three-tiered service:

  1. 2.    30-day-boarding Package:  For this package you will be required to either present your pets at Paws Resort for the initial RNATT (rabies) test, which initiates the pre-export preparation of your pet for export, or present them to your local vet to have them perform this test.  Then, at 30 days prior to their departure, you will book them into our facility for boarding in our luxury accommodation, during which time they will undergo the many remaining tests, treatments and examinations necessary to prepare them for export.  Having them board with us will remove the stress of all the transport backwards and forwards during the last 4 weeks of their pre-export period.  They will be right where they need to be, when they need to be there, and it reduces the risk of delays due to not being able to make it to us (or to your local vet) on time for a particular procedure.  We are able to board them for any length of time you may require, in addition to this final 30 days, for example if you are travelling to New Zealand before your pets are eligible to do so, or if you will be away at a time when a required procedure needs to be done. As part of this package, we will also apply for your pets’ import permits, book them into the New Zealand post-export quarantine station, and any other administrative requirements of preparing your pets for export.

Once your pets have completed their pre-export preparation, your pet travel company of choice can collect them from Paws Resort or from your home, and transport them to the airport for their flight to their new home in New Zealand.  If you require a recommendation for a reputable pet transport company, please ask us, and we will be happy to advise you.
